The Boston Beer Company Essay Example for Free
The capital of Massachusetts Beer Comp separately EssayOverview The capital of Massachusetts Beer Company has had amazing success in its transition from a sm totally scale microbrewer to a abundant scale national brewery. Almost all of the ac ships companys success is ascribable to the surface-to-air missileuel Adams lager beer product line, which has hardly changed from the founding of the company in 1984, to the initial offering in 1995, to the present day. In feature, much of the appeal of Samuel Adams comes from its microbrew image and the founder, Jim Kochs, commitment to the brewing process and a premium beer. In recent years, however, the company has implemented a steel-new system for growth which has embroild introducing a light beer that provide gain much mainstream appeal. While this has increased internets for the company, it has also odd the company vulnerable to gateway by diluting its betray name. For this reason, the companys dodging for the imme diate future has to make a significant shift, from a strategy of growth to a strategy of protection. It must focus on maintaining its current profits by pr eveting entry both from small breweries looking to copy the BBCs strategy and from large breweries looking to use their expansive resources to steal some of BBCs commercialise share. History of capital of Massachusetts Beer The capital of Massachusetts Beer Company began as a microbrewery in capital of Massachusetts, Massachusetts in 1984. Its first cases of beer were only sold to capital of Massachusetts bars, but the company quickly branched bug out geographically. Fueled by awards and credit from prestigious beer festivals, Samuel Adams Boston Lager was gettable on much of the East Coast by the late 1980s and nationally by 1992.The company went state-supported on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995. The Boston Beer Companys strategy for growth was one of differentiation. The company created a risqueer musical none beer t han the majority of American beers by using more than expensive ingredients and less urine, and it used its packaging and its commercials to advertise this commitment to quality. In fact, because of its use of only barleycorn, hops, yeast, and water as its ingredients, Samuel Adams won the honor of being the first American beer to be sold in Germany, a distinction that helped its image in America even more. One occupation strategy that the company employed as it started to grow was using extra brewing space in other companys breweries to brew their beer. Since the company was growing at a double digit rate, it didnt nominate a lot of extra capital to build its sustain breweries, so this was a good strategy for them during their period of growth. And, since these breweries were distributed throughout the country, this strategy allowed the Boston Beer Company to maximize the freshness of the beer it sold.In fact, the now famous figure of printing a freshness label on bottled beer was started by the Boston Beer Company on its Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The company ensured quality production in these drive off breweries by hiring nonplusd brewmasters to oversee the contract brewing. The company also brewed some beer on its own property, both in Boston and later in a plant they purchased in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2002, the company took a risk by introducing Sam Adams debile, a light beer version of their Samuel Adams Lager. They had never produced a light beer before, and it was Kochs stance that the company couldnt brew a light beer that would be up to their standards of flavor. The expanded node base that the company would target with the sale of a light beer was too lucrative a trade to ignore, however, and the light beer market was almost devoid of any Better Beers, so after three years of development Sam Adams set about was born. The advertising expenditures for 2002 increased by 25. 7% or $20. 6 million over 2001 due to the promotion of Sam Adams Lig ht2, which enlarge the financial risk of producing and selling it.The new beer had the short term effect of attracting new consumers to the Samuel Adams brand, although the long term effect has yet to be seen. The growth of the Boston Beer Company was very impressive, and can be attributed to a superior product, good business strategy, and an unsaturated market for high-quality beer. But now there are new challenges facing the company. There are always new fads in the beer industry current trends are low-carb beers and fruityflavored malt beverages. The Boston Beer Company needs to decide which of these trends to resolve to, and how torespond to each. Above all the company needs to continue its strategy of differentiation that allowed it to achieve its current profitability. It is its image for quality above major American beers like Budweiser, Coors, and moth miller that allows it to keep its prices, and its profits, high. Current Industry Analysis The Boston Beer Companys pro duct is a remedy beer. A better beer is delimitate as either a barter beer or an import, and is characterized by higher prices and quality. A craft beer is defined as one which is brewed with 100% malted barley as its grain. The major American beer companies typically use a mixture of malted barley along with other grains such as rice or corn, since these are less expensive and have less full-bodied flavors. Rivals in the better beer industry include such foreign companies as Corona, Heineken, and Guinness, as healthful as domestic companies such as Sierra Nevada, Petes, and a number of microbreweries roughly the country. While the beer industry overall is very rivalrous, the better beer industry is not so, as evidenced by high profit margins (the Boston Beer Company routinely posts profit margins of over 50%).The rivalry that does exist tends to revolve around quality competition rather than price competition. There are numerous substitutes for better beer. All alcoholic bevera ges are substitutes for the Boston Beer Companys product, although the deuce closest substitutes are major American beers and flavored malt beverages wine and spirits are less relevant substitutes for the purposes of this analysis. Budweiser, Coors, and Miller are all large brand name beers which have low prices and low quality compared to better beers.Price sensitive consumers typically buy these beers. Smirnoff Ice, Skyy Blue, and Bacardi Silver are all similarly priced to the better beers, but they have fruitier flavors and therefore appeal to consumers with a different taste preference. The suppliers for the Boston Beer Company are similar to the suppliers for any brewery. Supplies that must be purchased include the ingredients like water, barley and hops, the equipment for brewing, and the transportation for distributing beer around the country. The ingredients are actually very inexpensive compared to the other two costs, and suppliers of barley and water dont have a lot of bar gaining power since these industries are fragmented. The hops industry, however, is more centralized. In order to ensure adequate hops supplies at prices cognize in advance the company regularly purchases hops futures. The company also employs an aggressive contract brewing strategy. Under this policy almost 60% of the companys products are brewed at noncompany owned breweries. By utilizing the excess cognitive content of geographically distributed breweries, the company can keep equipment and transportation costs low while providing a fresher and thus higher quality product. This brewing approach carries inherent risks by giving probable rivals some control over the companys production capacity. Indeed the company is currently involved in a lawsuit with Miller after Millers attempt to back out of a brewing contract early. To protect itself from these risks the company enters into contracts with a diverse set of brewers for a much larger amount of beer than they actually produce.T his redundant capacity is meant to shield the company from any number of contract brewers defaulting on their contracts. Buyer bargaining power doesnt have significant influence on the Boston Beer Company since their buyers are grocery stores and bars. The grocery industry and the bar industry are both fragmented, so each store or bar that buys from the Boston Beer Company comprises a very small amount of total company gross revenue, and the loss of any one buyer wont significantly support the company.Complements in the better beer industry include the popularity of bars, snack foods like pretzels and nachos, and sporting events like football games. While the Boston Beer Company doesnt provide any of these complements, they do provide some amount of customer education. Customer education includes advertising awards the company has won, advertising their brewing processes, and calling attention to their premium ingredients. This serves to exchange people of the superior quality of Samuel Adams, thereby convincing them to pay a premium price.Customer education is a fairly clever and successful strategy for a number of beer companies, but it benefits better beers more than overthrow quality beers, so the Boston Beer Company could probably take advantage of this by guidance more on customer education. The BBC also has an advantage over small high-quality breweries because its economy of scale allows more customers to be reached per dollar spent on customer education. Any company in the beverage industry has the potential to enter Samuel Adams market, and it is always crucial for a company to be aware of contingent entry from all sides.Companies that make wine, spirits, or malt beverages could all enter the market, and we have actually seen in recent years that spirits companies have been expanding into new markets by producing malt beverages under the name of the parent spirits company. However, the most dangerous potential entrants would be other beer compa nies. Other craft breweries that sell their beer on a small scale might attempt to copy the BBCs strategy to grow into a national brand and steal some of BBCs market share. Also, major American breweries could use their expansive resources to brew high quality beers that could compete with Samuel Adams on a national level.A third, and even more weighed down possibility, would be the combination of these two forces a major brewery could buy a high quality microbrewery and use their national advertising and distribution infrastructure to market the microbrew to the public on a large scale. Given the Boston Beer Companys high profit margins and the relatively low level of rivalry at bottom their market, it is very likely that entry pass on occur and erode away at BBCs profits if BBC is unprepared. We believe that responding to this possibility should be at the cutting edge of the companys business strategy for the immediate future. The Boston Beer Companys Strategy Using Reputation as an Entry Barrier The BBCs initial strategy was one of growth. This was fitting for it when it was a microbrewery looking to gain national and international sales. During its expansion in the early 1990s, the company took advantage of the fact that consumer take up for craft beers was increasing, while there were hardly a(prenominal) other companies doing the similar. Since the new market was unsaturated, the Boston Beer Company was able to earn an inexpensive report for its Samuel Adams brand name by being the first large scale mover into the national craft beer market.By the late 1990s, the BBCs growth rate had begun to decline. In an effort to keep up growth, the company switched to a strategy of trying to increase the demand for craft beer. It did this through large scale advertising, and most significantly through the introduction of a light beer that brought light beer drinkers over to the better beer market. The Boston Beer Companys strategy was an effective one for man y years, and enabled it to befit the profitable national company that it is today. However, if the BBC wants to maintain its profitability, it will need to find a way to protect its market share from entrants, and this will require a shift in the companys strategy back to increasing its share of the Better Beer market rather than of the mainstream market. The biggest threats to the BBC are the major American beer companies, which have massive resources that would allow them to compete with the BBC. The BBCs two advantages over these major companies are experience and paper, and the major companies could easily gain experience by purchase an existing craft beer company and utilizing its brewing procedures. Therefore, the BBC must protect its reputation at all costs, since its reputation is the only formidable entry roadblock preventing Budweiser, Coors, and Miller from successfully invading Samuel Adams market. The companys best strategy would be to slow their growth in order to wor k on strengthening their Samuel Adams Boston Lager brand name. Additionally, if the BBC diminishes its focus on growth, it could very well have the effect of reducing the incentive for these three major companies to enter the craft beer market, since the BBC will not be seen as so significant a threat. While there is a risk that slowing growth will leave the company vulnerable to entry by smaller companies, it is the large companies that have the most resources to compete with the BBC, so reducing the incentive for large companies to enter is worth the possible risk that more small companies will enter. The uniqueness and integrity that allowed the Samuel Adams brand to gain popularity are starting to be overshadowed by the companys attempts to pull in more mainstream consumers, and this is hurting the companys brand name. The strategy for the future needs to focus on building back customer loyalty for the companys core product line, i. e. Samuel Adams Boston Lager. First and foremos t, the Boston Beer Company needs to continue reducing its expenditures on Sam Adams Light. During the introduction of Sam Adams Light in 2001-02, revenues and gross profit increased, but expenditures on advertising Sam Light were extremely high, and much of the sales of Sam Light were thought to be due to cannibalism of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. In 2003 when advertising of Sam Adams Light was decreased, sales of the light beer dropped significantly. Although Samuel Adams Boston Lager sales increased during the period between the quartern quarters of 2002 and 2003, overall shipments dropped 6% during this period3 because of the lowered demand for Sam Light after the decline of the Sam Light marketing campaign. However, even though sales were lower, net income was higher after the end of the marketing campaign4. The company should therefore continue to keep its advertising levels for Sam Adams Light low.In addition to the high financial cost of advertising Sam Adams Light, it is likel y that the large-scale marketing of Sam Adams Light could hurt the company in the long run by diluting the Samuel Adams brand name. The purpose of Sam Light is to appeal to mainstream beer drinkers, but the companys consumer base is comprised of individuals who pride themselves on drinking a beer that is not mainstream. With potential entrants looming from above and below, the Boston Beer Company can not afford to lose its reputation for uniqueness.Still, Sam Light is a good revenue stream as a supplement to Samuel Adams Boston Lager, but it should cease to be the companys main focus. The Twisted Tea and Hard Core products are malt beverages that the company produces on a small scale. These brands are unnecessary for the companys success, and if the company adopts a strategy to focus on Samuel Adams Boston Lager then it would be advantageous to eliminate these products. While the products dilute the companys brand name in a similar way to Sam Adams Light, they dont provide nearly th e revenue that Sam Light does.By either selling or closing down these brand names, the Boston Beer Company can distance itself further from the malt beverage industry and improve its positioning as a Better Beer company. Dumping these products would help the BBCs image of integrity in the eyes of their consumers, and this image will be crucial if the company is to protect its market share from entrants. There have been a number of attempted entries into the Sam Adams market which demonstrate the need for quality and reputation.Coors owns Killians Irish Red and Anheuser-Busch owns Michelob and has a stake in Red Hook, all brands that have had poor success in the Better Beer Market. Most consumers are well aware of the fact that Michelob is just another domestic beer sold at a high price, and so its a brand without much of a quality image. On the other hand, its not well known that Coors owns Killians since its brewed in Canada and has an import label. While this label might signal so me quality in many consumers eyes, Killians has no reputation and no customer base. Finally, Red Hook was a quality microbrew ale with a good reputation and customer base that was bought by AB. Since this purchase in 1994 the caudex price of Red Hook has plummeted from 30 to 2 and sales have been poor. While the reason for this is not exactly clear, its possible that this failure is due to a loss of integrity that occurred when the microbrew became owned by a major domestic brewer, or that AB simply wasnt able to operate that sheath of brewery. ABs failure in this attempt doesnt indicate that they will give up on entering the craft beer industry, however, especially if craft beers grow to be more of the national market. With such high profit margins and a strong market position, the BBC might be tempted to increase sales by decreasing prices, but this strategy should definitely be avoided. The high prices for Samuel Adams Boston Lager and Sam Adams Light signal to consumers and othe r companies that these beers are of higher quality, and since demand in the Better Beer market is relatively inelastic, there would likely be no increase in net income if prices were reduced. Reducing prices would cause the BBC to appear more of a threat to the three major American beer companies, and could therefore expedite the entry of one of these companies into the market.Due to the nature of the Better Beer industry, the company needs to give for quality competition over price competition. With the introduction of Sam Light in 2002 the percentage of BBCs sales comprised of bottles vs. kegs increased since most Sam Light is sold in bottles, and since Boston Lager sales declined slightly. While revenues are lower per barrel of draft beer, profit margins are higher due to lower costs per barrel. Additionally, beer served on tap is usually able to retain a higher quality than beer served from a bottle. For these reasons and others, it would be a good strategy for the Boston Beer C ompany to increase its emphasis on selling its beer in kegs to bars. While most grocery stores already carry Samuel Adams Boston Lager, there are unruffled a large number of bars that dont have Boston Lager on draft, and this deprives many consumers of being able to drink the beer in its highest quality form while also depriving the company of the added revenue that bar sales bring in. Since the companys new focus needs to be on emphasizing the quality of its beers, increasing the availability of its draft beer is in line with its strategy. An added benefit of increasing prevalence in bars is the opportunity for barman education and consequent consumer education. The company should seriously consider providing literature about their beer along with the kegs that they sell to bars, since educating bar owners and bartenders about the premium ingredients and freshness standards that the company holds will have a trickle-down effect to the beer drinkers. Continuing with this strategy o f edging away from the mainstream, the Samuel Adams line should switch back to its original label. The current label is simple with few colors, similar to the major company labels, while microbrew labels typically have a more complex picture that distinguishes the brand. Switching back to the BrewerPatriot label would signal to both new and old customers that the BBC is committed their roots and to quality. Putting Excess Capital to Use If the BBC continues to be successful in fending off potential entrants and if it maintains its high profit margins while staying away from a growth strategy, then it needs a plan for investing its profits. In the past, profits have been invested in growth or in stock of other companies, but in line with the new strategy of slow growth, there might be areas in which their money could be better invested. Some of the money could be used to fund the customer education programs mentioned earlier, but it might also be wise to start owning more breweries. Co ntract brewing proved to be efficient and successful during their growth phase. Up until the late nineties they were increasing sales by double digits each year.At this time it would have been difficult to impossible for production capacity to keep up with sales, not to mention for the company to secure the necessary capital. However, in the past 5 years growth has slowed, and consistently high profits have led to large amounts of excess capital. BBC has been keeping some capital liquid state in short term bonds and mutual funds and using the rest of the capital to buy back company stock4. There are several reasons wherefore contract brewing makes less sense now. First, the BBC has run into situations in which being a contract brewer has hurt the companys reputation.Anheuser-Busch used a dateline interview and ran a series of attack ads claiming Samuel Adams Boston Lager was no different from other domestic beers since much of it was made in the same breweries as these domestic be ers5. The ads were eventually dropped when an advertising watchdog group found the ads to be factually incorrect, but the damage had been done6. Brewing all of their own beer would modify them from such claims, reinforcing their reputation. Additionally Miller tried to back out of a large brewing contract7.BBC won in arbitration, but millions were lost in statutory expenses and backup contracts which were never realized. The dispute also brought more attention to the fact that some Samuel Adams is made by the majors, diluting their brand name more. BBC already produces half of their own product, and sells excess capacity to other brewers. This indicates that the company already has the experience and know-how that it needs to operate their own breweries on some scale. With so much capital available and sales growth slow, BBC should purchase a few local breweries around the country to produce all of its product.Excess capacity in these breweries can be contracted out as is currentl y done in the companys Cincinnati plant. By owning and operating their own breweries, the BBC can avoid the damage to its reputation as well as the contract disputes that it has to incur by operating as a contract brewer. Conclusions The Boston Beer Company has shown that it has a successful business strategy for growth. The companys management now needs to show that it can maintain its profitability at its current level by adopting a strategy that creates barriers for entry into the national craft beer market. Many conventional entry barriers can be overcome by either regional microbreweries, which have the experience necessary to brew quality beers, or by major American breweries, which have the resources to market a new beer nation-wide. The one significant entry barrier that the Boston Beer Company still holds on to is its good reputation, which it gained both by being an early mover into the national craft beer market and by maintaining unmitigated quality controls. As the comp any has matured it has drifted away from its reputation of uniqueness. In order for the company to maintain its hold on the American craft beer market, it will need to revive its reputation at all costs. Because the companys growth has slowed, it has an opportunity to use its excess capital to fund programs that help slog its image as a high quality, high integrity brewer. If it continues to differentiate itself from major American breweries like Budweiser, Coors, and Miller, then despite the Boston Beer Companys smaller resources, it should still be able to hold its consumer base and protect its profits from entry into its market. After analyzing mainland chinaw ar as a terra firma, their beer market and relevant line of work information, we create an effective way for Molson Canadian to be introduced into the Chinese market. The following information provided explains our direction and reinforces our decision to enter the market in this fashion. Introduction. The beer mug Molson is one of Canadas oldest consumer leaf blade names and one of mating Americas oldest brands. John Molson appointed Canadas oldest brewery in 1786 near the St. Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec. The Molson caller has a range of beer infusion including Molson Canadian, a l maturer beer containing 5% of alcohol per volume, Molson Canadian let down contains almost 2% of alc/vol, Molson Canadian 6. 0 Cold Shots (6% of alc/vol), Molson Canadian Sub Zero (it freighter performd at temperatures below freezing through innovative technology) and its new Molson Canadian 67 (contains only 67 calories).Along with the Molson brand of beverage s, Molson in any case owns the rights to former(a) brands such as the various Rickards brands as well as distribution rights of popular imports such as Heineken from Holland. Molsons brewing methods do non utilize preservatives in frame to maintain crisp, clean and fresh savoring. Instead, they call traditional best methods along with skilled brew know to ensure best quality from suppliers to retailers. As a result, Molson has received numerous awards in the past, including the gold for North American Style Lager in 2008. In 2005 Molson Brewery merged in equal parts with American brewing company Coors, forming the Molson Coors create from raw stuff Company. The purpose of this report is to introduce a marketing plan for Molson to enter the Chinese consumer market. The main objective is to analyze and determine manageable ways to successfully di stribute Molsons signature beer (Molson Canadian) to the Chinese consumer market. The next sections provide country and business analysis as well as the marketing mix in order to construct an effective and efficient marketing plan. Also, an action plan lead be prepared to consider effectuation of strategies and their associated bud stick arounds. Country Analysis china is turn up in eastern Asia and is the fourth considerablest country in the world. It borders a number of countries including Vietnam, North Korea, India and Pakistan. mainland mainland mainland China to a fault has the largest population in the world with more(prenominal) than 1.3 billion (1,338,612,968) people. China also has some(prenominal) languages and dialects spoken throughout the country, but the study ones are mandarin and Cantonese. (CIA Fact book 2010) China is a communist state, however in the experience 30 years the nation has gradually changed from a centrally planned economy to a more market or iented economy. This transition has benefited China because it opened its boarders to international trade, increasing the countries import/export figures dramatically over the years. In addition, the more open economic arranging allowed for an influx of foreign direct investment into the country. Chinas rampant growth in the past 30 years is evident in the countrys economic statistics. 2009 country GDP numbers surface China as 3rd overall worldwide in total GDP with $8. 791 cardinal (US$), only second to the European Union and the United States. (CIA Fact book 2010) This figure can be put into perspective however when analyzing GDP per capita where China places 128th worldwide with only $6,500 (US$), a figure which has been improving throughout the years.Although china is one of the fastest developing countries in the world, its government still faces several challenges including cut corruption, sustaining adequate job growth rates and environmental concerns such as pollution. In addition, China has long been perceived by different nations as a country not up code regarding authoritative policies such as human rights and intellectual property rights. However, their inclusion into the World Trade Organization in 2001 has vastly improved their global standing and more joint and domestic initiatives have been undertaken to improve the perception of China globally.Rationale for Choosing China There were several divulge reasons for choosing China as our target market. Chinas vast population was an influence because it provided a large potential consumer base. Another reason is the large demand for beer which continues to grow as middle and upper class income levels continue to rise in the country (Datamonitor 2004). In addition, several international beer brands have not managed to effectively penetrate the Chinese market. Therefore, if an international beer company in china survives an initial tough few years, it has the potential to make significant cyber space liberation forward. The beer industry in China give be analyzed in more detail in the following sections. Other important reasons for the selection of China was that its healthy trade relations with Canada throughout the years. China is Canadas 2nd largest trading partner, only second to the United States of America with bilateral trade in the midst of China and Canada reaching over $50 billion(CAN) in 2009 (Statscan, 2010). Finally, notion that China is the fastest growing nation in the world and is predicted to be the worlds largest economy by 2025 had a significant impact on our selection.(Foreign affairs and international trade Canada, 2005) (See App subvertix A) Environment of the Beer Industry in China China is one of the worlds largest alcohol producers in the world and in the next few years it is expected to go surpass the United States as the largest alcohol producer in the world (Newman, Ian 2006). China has a very large beer market worth around $6. 154 billion (US D$) and produced more than 26,244 million litres in 2004 (Datamonitor 2004). Both of these figures are significant increases from the previous year 2003.For the majority of brewers around the world, the Chinese beer market is too large to ignore and at times, too labored to grasp because of its complicity. China is viewed as the next big probability in the beer industry because its large population and its high economic growth is unmatchable elsewhere. However, many international brewers have failed to penetrate the Chinese beer market. This could be due to unfamiliar market dynamics and the presence of too many domestic beer brands in the Chinese market. Although many international brands have failed, some analogous SAB Miller have succeeded. It is believed that focus on quality brands and long term entry plans were contributors to the success companies like SAB Miller have had in the Chinese market. Some of the leading brewers in China include Tsingato brewery, SAB Miller, Foste rs Group Limited and Noble China Inc. (Datamonitor 2004) Threats and Opportunities Having looked at the global environment of the beer industry in China, our focus will now shift to the threats and opportunities in the market. First, one of the main threats is the other large beer companies and breweries that we are going to be competing with, both domestic and international.Chinese domestic beer accounts for a large percentage of ingestion in the country, and as an international product, we will be facing laughable competition from other international companies already present in the market. A less(prenominal)(prenominal) concerning threat is that the older demographics in China prefer to drink more wine than they do beer. This however is contrasted by the increasing popularity of beer in the nation. The biggest opportunity is the fact that the China has largest population in the world and also that it is the worlds fastest growing country.Another opportunity is that there is st eady growth rate predicted in the next few years for the beer industry (Datamonitor 2004). Another key opportunity is that Chinese consumers rate taste and reputation in their beverage products, we believe that Molson Canadian can cater to this need with our product implementation. (Industry Digest, 2005) On the technological side, the Chinese market has several domestic brewing companies in the nation. This could be very useful because the technology to produce beer in China is promptly open. On the negative side, China incorporates strict restrictions on content through various media. For example, internet censorship is common in the nation, leaving marketers with limited when choosing which grapheme of media to use for marketing purposes (Human Rights Watch, 2006). Socially, alcohol plays an important role in Chinese tradition and Chinese society as a whole. intoxicant is used in a lot of Chinese traditional festivals and celebrations, as well as it is also a very important p art of Chinese religions. Alcohol can also be found in traditional Chinese medication and also used for cooking (Newman, Ian 2006). Market Buyer Characteristics many an(prenominal) of the beer buyer characteristics in the Chinese market are similar to those of Canada.First, g finisher plays a large role in that the majority of beer consumers are males. However, the female segment of the market has steady continued to increase as china develops further, mainly due to increased spending power of Chinese women. However, this gender bias cannot be overlooked as the female segment of the buyers is very important because in some major cities like capital of Red China, women make up to around 30% of beer drinkers in the city. Most of the buyers of beer in china are between the age groups of 25 to 44, similar to the demographics found in Canada (Industry Digest, 2005).Another important aspect about buyer behaviour in China is that it varies according to the region or province. The same app lies for the beer market in China, for example people from the southern regions of China drink more beer at bars an pubs and banquets whereas people in the northern regions are more likely to drink beer while dining because they believe that it ads flavour to their dining. Also in the south of China the climate is very hot so casual drinking as a nitty-gritty to cool down is common similar to Canada in the summer months. (Industry Digest, 2005) Furthermore, reasons why people buy beer in China are important aspect for marketers. For consumers in China, value and good taste are important characteristics that consumers escape to look for. These qualities of beer products precede the importance of other calculates such as price and brand reputation. Brand loyalty to domestic brands is more common in certain locations such as Beijing, but brand loyalty overall in general is not a decisive mover for many consumers in the Chinese beer industry. People between the ages of 16 to 44 who live in Guangzhou and shanghai, switch brands on a tied(p) basis (Industry Digest, 2005).Selection of and Rationale for Chosen vogue of Entry into the Target Country The entry mode that we have chosen for entering into China will be exporting through an import contact that will then use local distributors to sell our product. The reason that we have selected this option is that although there is a huge potential for companies to succeed in the Chinese beer market, there are still many risks of doing business in China. By choosing exporting as our first step, it allows us to reduce financial and investment risks. Many studies have shown that having a good relationship with the Chinese government and business owners is a significantly important factor for foreign companies to success in China (Owen, 2010). Therefore, before moving into further actions such as partnerships and joint ventures, we want to have Molson establish a good working relationship with the Chinese government. At the same time, this entry mode will also give Molson ample time to develop the relationship with potential Chinese partners, as well as get better understanding about the government regulations for foreign ownership of land building resources.Last but not least, comparing this mode of entry to partnerships and joint ventures, exporting requires less finical investment. For example, Molson does not need to build factories or gravel up mass manufacturing operations right away which will save a significant amount of money right from the get go. In addition, if anything goes wrong initially, this entry mode allows us to withdraw the business from China much easier than if we had already established manufacturing operations in the country. Objectives.Due to the risks that beer companies are facing in splaying into the Chinese market, Molson Canadian wants to move slowly into the Chinese market. In other words, the company wants to test the environment first and then take the necessary steps to further the expansion process. First of all, Molson Canadian will establish the mode of entry which is the exporting dodging, and then the company will choose a well known Chinese beer company such as Tsingtao as our distributor, because this will reduce the uncertainties. While working with Tsingtao, Molson Canadian wants to ensure distribution ne tworks are reaching desired locations for sale of product and look for other possible distributors and partners as well in order to get it prepared for our early development purposes such as joint ventures or partnerships. The next objective that we kick up is gathering forecasting information for potential future margin and feedback from consumers. This step will help us to make sure if the Chinese market is rattling worth to investing in and develop strong indicators to our customers preferences, in order to better serve our customers.During this stage, Molson Canadian will also be able to get more familiarized about the Ch inese regulations related to the beer companies, especially for foreign companies. After the completion of this stage, the company will be able to develop plans for future operations based on the information that it has collected from before. If the information does not support the expansion, then Molson Canadian should stop developing, and possibly withdraw the business from China. If everything goes well, the company will pick the right distributors and partners that have been evaluated before to start the joint ventures or partnerships with local Chinese companies. The reason that we decided to do joint ventures or partnership eventually is that based on information from the Euromonitor International, which states by doing a joint venture it will allow foreign companies to gain local market experience These joint ventures should provide foreign companies with a necessary foothold in the market which can, in the future, be exploited by their own products (Euromonitor International , 2004).The last objective is to work towards generating steadily increasing profits in the future, which will be in more details in our action plan. Limitations There are also limitations that could attain Molson Canadians entry into the Chinese market. As we mentioned before, the uncertainty of the Chinese market is a huge concern. First of all, the government regulations and samples are different from what we have seen in the North American market.Based on the article written by Owen, issues included the Chinese top-down approach to standards and conformance, Openness and transparency, Low self-assurance in private-sector standards setting and conformity assessment, and Inconsistent implementation creates uncertainty(Owen, 2010) are all the concerns that Molson needs to pay attention. The second uncertainty is that the intense competition will be created by both local and foreign beers companies in the crowded industry. As represented by Euromonitor International, there are s everal foreign breweries doing business in this market now. Many of which have found that the market is more difficult to operate than they expected before entering the Chinese market. Problems included comparatively high production costs and a fragmented market, combined with oversupply, has caused a market slowdown which led many companies to cut their prices. Many of the companies have already chosen to exit the market and cut their losses (Euromonitor International, 2004). Criteria In terms of the time frame, we estimated that will take one year to complete the objectives from 1 to 3, which is also considered to be our primary expansion. As mentioned above this includes the establishment of the entry mode- exporting, develop appropriate distribution networks, and collecting forecasting information and feedback from consumers. The secondary expansion includes the inclosure future operating plans such as joint ventures or partnerships after everything has been created our final goal will be work towards generating steadily increasing profits in the future. We estimated that will take 1 or 2 years to finish framing the joint venture or partnership structure. SegmentationFor our breakdown we decided to focus on 5 main demographic criterias. We obtained basic secondary data based on the past buying patterns of Chinese and other Asian consumers. From that data, we sorted and decided upon with segments of the market we would test for. We based the selection of the criteria on hypothesis testing and concluded that only traits that that appeared consistently within two standard deviations (95%) of each segments sample would be counted these demographics being on age, region, ethnicity, financial capacity and lifestyle within the 18 45 age range. For this analysis we have ranked them in order of popularity and difference in cost relative to other aid beers from this analysis we have distilled this ranking system. * Molson Canadian Subzero is loved for its flash and fancy supplicant * Molson Canadian Lager is popular for its strong distinct flavour * Molson Canadian Light beer is popular for its ironed taste and lack of a strong after taste * Lastly Molson Canadian 67 is the least preferred. This is due to the misconception that diet beers are more diluted than regular beers and that consumers are getting less for their money. From our demographic analysis of Chinese consumers of a certain demographic tend to prefer certain tastes to be present in their alcohol and while these preferences are not as potent in affecting purchase decisions as they would be in north America, never the less they are significant to warrant analysis and attention. Characteristic Characteristic Related Price Hesperianized Stronger Alcohol More expensive Traditional Smoother Alcohol less(prenominal) Expensive Sichuan Stronger Alcohol Less expensive Han Smoother Alcohol Less expensive.Tibetan Stronger Alcohol Less expensive Southern Smoother Alcohol Less expensive N orthern Stronger Alcohol More expensive Old Stronger Alcohol average Young Smoother Alcohol Less expensive (Data Extrapolated from Chinas beer consumption and Barley imports) From our analysis we can conclude that as you move up north and become more westernized the taste for alcohol becomes steadily stronger and that people value alcohol more. We have found that there are many cultural factors that the affect the purchasing characteristics of each segment.Age Age is a significant factor when incorporating this model, with younger generations preferring relatively cheaper products than the older generation. As Chinas socialistic society progress, legislation has greatly altered the spending habits of consumers. Such like the 1 child policy has left a significantly little working force to support the country. With most average working couples supporting 3 generations concurrently (Adams, 2008), this can impact greatly on the decisions regarding the purchase of the luxury items suc h as bounty foreign beer.Region In regards to region, there are smaller difference in the tastes and spending habits of northerners vs. southerners. While the South has a higher pay-grade than those of the north, historically the south has always been a more crowded and competitive place (Trent, 2009). Thus those living there adapt to have a more conservative outlook in regards to consumption and purchases. Contrary, while the average northerner earns significantly less money they are more likely to spend extra for what they want (Trent, 2009).Also cities along the coast tend to adopt more western ideals than those located on the interior of China. Ethnicity While chinas population is 87% Han (Doan, 2008) there is a small population of minorities that also live in china. though living in the same country this minority have significantly different tastes from your average Chinese. These Minorities include Tibetans, Wiggers and Manchus. Lifestyle Since China has opened its doors to i nternational products and cultures, there have been many Chinese that have adopted a more western-lifestyle.With Western styles often come more western tastes (Qingbin et at, 1998), in contrast to the smoother taste western-styled Chinese prefer a stronger tasting alcohol. Marketing Mix This section presents strategic alternates that Molson Canadian should take into consideration, recommendation of the suitable alternative and implementation of marketing plan through the use of the controllable elements of marketing mix. Strategic Alternatives There are two strategic alternatives that Molson Canadian can use to expand its beer brand to Chinese consumer market.Molson Canadian can expand its beer brand to Chinese consumer market by exporting its product line on trade or off trade. Alternative 1 The first alternative for Molson Canadian is to export its product line on trade, meaning that their target locations for sale are establishments which serve alcohol. For our product, we want to target specifically high end restaurants, pubs and bars. High end restaurants, pubs and bars would offer high quality products therefore the best quality beer would also be expected from customers. one of the main strengths of Molson Canadian is that they utilize high quality ingredients as well as a team of brew masters that make sure the beer follows the high quality standards, qualities that Chinese consumers would be drawn to. Additional strengths of Molson Canadian is that it offers product differentiation such as best quality barley and no use of preservatives for its production. Also, the products country image is perceived as good quality product since it is North American which means that the products symbolize Western civilization, status and modernity (Zhou Hui, 2003).A weakness that should be taken into account is that Molson Canadian is not well known in the Chinese market, so it whitethorn be difficult to find consumers initially. However, opportunities in Chinese alcohol industry should be considered regarding this matter. For instance, an opportunity encountered is that there is an increasing demand for better tasting and premium products, meaning that premium beer sales will be more likely to increase in upcoming years (Euromonitor International, 2010).Also, another significant opportunity is that as consumers disposable incomes increase, consumers will be able to spend on leisure time such as going out to pubs and bars. In fact, there is a strong development of the consumer foodservice market, as well as, an increase of premium beer in forecasted years which accounts for 70% of total value growth from 2008 to 2013 in local funds (Euromonitor International, 2009). In addition to the above points, Chinese consumers are not price sensitive regarding on-trade places, indicating that premium and standard beer will become popular among the consumers (Euromonitor International, 2009).Lastly, a major threat towards this alternative is that the r ise of prices for materials such as oil and energy can affect transportation cost. The National Development and Reform Commission (NRDC) had describe a price increase of RMB 1,000 per tonne for oil which is approximately equivalent to US$ 170 in 2008 (Euromonitor International, 2009). This means that there will be a need for adjustments in terms of price of beer to circumvent export costs to China. Alternative 2 The second alternative for Molson Canadian to export in China is to sell its product off trade. For this alternative, Molson Canadian beer should be sold in small mart stores and/or hypermarkets. In order to better analyze this alternative for better profitability of the company, a mini SWOT analysis should be established. A major strength for this company is that the beer could be sold as standard lager beer to Chinese market with product differentiation. For example, the beer could be differentiated towards its high quality ingredients used in the production such as barle y and record hop and its high quality control standards.A weakness encountered in this option is that Molson Canadian is not a well known beer brand among Chinese market. An opportunity for selling Molson Canadian beer off trade is that this is main channel of sales accounting for 68% of volume sales in 2008 (Euromonitor International, 2009). Also, small independent grocery stores in rural areas account for 66% of total volume sales in 2008 (Euromonitor International, 2009). However, threats should also be taken into account for this alternative. A major threat there is high competitive market between domestic and foreign beer brands. In fact, the three top companies China Resources Enterprise Co Ltd, Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd and Beijing Yanjing Brewing Corp accounted for 41% of total volume sales in 2007 (Euromonitor International, 2009). There are also two leading international companies participating in Chinese beer market which are InBev and Anheuser-Busch. Another threat encount ered is that consumers are price sensitive towards beer in off trade channels as they have a range of beer selection as well as prices that differ from different brands issues (Euromonitor International, 2009). Recommendation. The best alternative for Molson Canadian is to target on-trade businesses, especially high end restaurants, pubs and bars. The main criterion for choosing this alternative was based on willingness to pay for high priced product. Also, Molson Canadian should consider the high competition with domestic and foreign beer brands in off-trade markets. In order to reach Chinese consumers, we have weighed the pros and cons of this alternative and believe that Molson Canadian would have the best chance for success by initially focusing on selling to high end restaurants, pubs, bars and so on.The first reason for this chosen alternative is that customers will pay for high quality at any price. The customers will pay for a product that provides better taste, healthier and premium packaged products (Euromonitor International, 2010) since their disposable income allows buying better quality products. In fact, according to China torrent Association, beer volume production has increased 6 % in the first half of 2009 (Euromonitor International, 2010).Also, when beer is sold in high end restaurants, its price will be set much higher price than at grocery stores, so Molson Canadian can generate profit using this method. According to Euromonitor International (2010), standard and premium beer account for only 10% of total sales volume, but generate around 50% of total profits in Chinas beer sector. One of downsides towards marketing on-trade is that it may be difficult to break into the market since Molson Canadian is not recognized publicly in China. Also, Molson Canadian may face harsh competition in Chinese on-trade markets. For example, Budweiser, Heineken, Tiger, and Carlsberg are the main multinationals that have majority of the premium beer sales on trade. This alternative is preferable to the other option since it provides the means to generate long term profit and on-trade customers will favour buying high quality product as their preferences change. Another reason for choosing this alternative other than off-trade is that grocery stores will offer a variety of beer brands that are cheaper and domestic Chinese brands, therefore consumers will have more general knowledge of the products available to them.Once the strategic alternative is implemented, there will be opportunities and challenges that should be relevant to Molson Canadian. A potential opportunity for Molson Canadian is to introduce Molson Canadian 67 which is a type of beer that contains only 67 calories. This is a significant advantage for this company since Chinese people are becoming more concerned about their health and wellness. In terms of challenges that Molson Canadian may face is that there will be competition within foreign beer brands such as Heineken that could affect Molson Canadians profitability.Implementation In order to execute the marketing strategy of exporting Molson Canadian beer to Chinese market in high end restaurants, pubs and bars, the company should consider the 4Ps of the marketing mix. First, the product provided is Molson Canadian lager beer by Molson Coors Brewing Company which is a high quality Canadian brand which Molson Coors will be able to sell its beer as premium brand because of it offers clean, crisp and fresh taste as well as the no use of preservatives. The price for Molson Canadian beer lager is planned to be high since most of target market in China is represented by medium to high income consumers. Consumers in high end restaurants, pubs and bars will able to buy a bottle of Molson Canadian lager beer for more than 20RMB or $3US(Eumonitor International, 2009) since high end restaurants will place their price three times its market price. For the promotional aspect of our product, Molson Canadian at tempt to use practices similar to those found in the North American markets. The use of commercials and posters display the refreshing qualities of a Canadian lager beer will be a major focus of the promotional ads. However, unlike the Canadian and American markets where beer commercials incorporate sexual messages to sell their products, ads in China will mirror those of beverage companies already operating in the country. To do this, the sexual appeal found in North American type commercials will be replaced with the quintessential Chinese humor found very often in Chinese advertisements. In addition, another promotional campaign will be launched in China based on the current public relations department knowledge of Molson Coors regarding drinking and driving programs. This program will be shared with the government of China to increase awareness since drink driving is one of major factor causing traffic accidents. In fact, according to the Ministry of Public Security, the number of road traffic accidents reached 107,193 during the first half of 2009, with the number of fatalities and injuries reaching 29,866 and 128,336 respectively (Euromonitor International, 2010).This promotional musical instrument will be helpful to reduce barriers that the government may place for Molson Canadian. Finally, another way to promote the beer brand is to provide an event marketing strategy since international sporting, economic and cultural events are strong drivers for beer consumption (All China Marketing research, 2008). For instance, Molson Canadian can potentially sponsor the 16th Asian Games in China which is taking place from November 12th to 27th, 2010 (Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee ,2010).Therefore, this sponsorship will bring brand awareness. Molson Canadian may have a backup plan if the sponsorship does not work out through donating a certain amount of money to the Asian Games event so then there will be also the brand name out there for consumers. A last marketing mix factor is place which could be achieved by utilizing the same distributors of Coors Light to d.

Gender Economics in Turkey
Gender sparings in turkeyElif olakIn titular Economy Under Participation Trap Added Worker personnelThis paper will look at the sexuality issues by focal pointing to a greater extent on female person side.Women in Informal EconomyWorldwide, womens familiarity in the light economy has increased since the early 1980s, as economic restructuring reduced job opportunities in the formal sphere of influence, increased the flexibility and casualness of apprehend marts, and increased the quest for additional family income. on that point is a strong association between womens employment and issue for exports with the liberalization of the economy in jokester. The moment of women engaged in lax activities grown dramatically with the increasing influence of economic liberalization and flexible functional conditions. Womens work in merchandise industries has been a pennyer of major interest since the early 1980s women emerged as an important push back supply especially for the g arment industry, just now their integration into the production has remained informal and mostly made invisible through the utilization of familial relations in small-scale workshops. It also brings harsh working condition and misfortunate nets which allow these sectors to become competitive.Unregistered economy refers to the legal economic activities which atomic number 18 not recorded officially to reduce production cost and strike tax evasion. Workplaces in unregistered economy atomic number 18 generally smaller in terms of scale low wages argon given to proles. There is an arbitrariness to recruit or fire proles. In rural area, TUK estimates a category of unpaid family worker as employed and the majority of women, who are not registered to any social security institution, work as unpaid family worker. If we consider non-agriculture area, women mostly work as a regular employee and casual employee in unregistered economy. Self employment means that their conductments de pend on the profit of directly produced goods. They can make decision over operational activities. We can consider traditional handicraft activities at a lower place this category. Women who get specific order for dressmaking or handicraft works. They can decide about the finishing time of work and their give inments afterwards work. Other home-based work includes the piecework for subcontractor or an early(a) mediator. From 2004 to 2013, 5,19% of women on average work at the home.http//www.birlesikmetal.org/kitap/kitap_03/2003-1.pdfhttp//www.tuik.gov.tr/PreHaberBultenleri.do?id=13590They arrive the conclusion that women are not willingly accept these jobs but they are depositd to accept. Due to gender-related point of view, women workers are more prone to be abused by their employers. They work for below official minimum wage and face with harsh conditions at work. They feel helpless and despair due to the behaviors of employers and treatment in the working place.Under Particip ation TrapTo define what the under participation trap means, we should look at the different factors which create this trap in relation to each other. Firstly, we consider the women with low levels of education. Most of them are apparent to work in the informal sector with low wages that are lesser than the payment given to domestic workers to do housework or shavercare. job supply liberates into be very low considering these issues. With the belief that girls will not have a chance to participate in wear down market with broad(prenominal) wages, families may want to invest lesser for the educations of girls. At this point, it creates a cycle, known as the under participation trap, that girls education contributes to keeping wages low so that it will keep comminute supply low. (World Bank typography 2009, 21)If we look at segmentation of labor market, we can see that formal sectors have higher(prenominal) productivity than informal sector and crevice slightly above minimum wages. Returns to both education and induce are higher in formal sector again. However, the choice of working in informal sectors occurs due to exclusion of low educated women in formal sectors. Very low wages in informal sector lead to low levels of labor supply. There are also very little transaction of low educated women from informal sector to formal sector. Women who work in informal economy face with the omit of social security problem which force them to quit job. There are employment possibilities which offer limited range of work in textile industry, domestic service or retail activities for low educated women. When we look at TUIK info for the reasons of universe out of labor force among women, the most important reason is that majority of them are busy with household works a want the day. However, when we turn our interest to men, on that point is no percentage given to household works. The retirement or being students become the important reason for being out of labo r force for men. Women are considered as housewives who have more time to dedicate for care giving and house works. This perception also brings some disadvantages to women such as dependence to men, lack of social security, or low self esteem. In the patriarchal family setting, men also see their household activity as an easy job with more spare time at home.Poorly educated women face with the cultural as well as economic barriers which prevent them to participate in the labor market. Former barrier includes the womens role as care givers and family pressure. Latter barrier includes womens participation in informal sector with low salaries and long working hours. Mothering and childcare are also other important determinants for female labor force participation. Mothers do not want to leave their kids alone so they need to stay at home to distribute care of them. In addition to this, they cannot afford to hire someone as a babysitter. Participants mentioned they would need to pay at least 500 TL monthly to hire somebody to take care of their children. To afford this, they would need to find a job that would pay them more than 1,500 TL,, was beyond what they could earn given their skills and education level. (World Bank Report 2009, 20)Added Worker Effect Discouraged Worker Effect after CrisisAdded worker force out means that if the unemployment of one spouse leads other spouse to increase his/her labor supply. We need to focus whether women have an incentive to participate in labor force when their husbands involuntarily lose their jobs. Due to the fact that my focus is on the crisis period, family members may also lose their hopes to find job which creates discouraged worker effect. The discouraged worker effects leads to hidden unemployment of the people who want to work but do not look for a job. Therefore, the actual unemployment rates can be underestimated with the control condition of this latter effect. (Balevent and Onaran 2003, 441)To analyze how women react to crisis period in Turkey, Cem Balevent and zlem Onaran looked at the Turkish Household Survey data from October rounds of 1988 and 1994 period. In 1994, crisis period, Turkish lira was depreciated by more than 50 per cent and by the end of the year, Turkish economy is contracted approximately 6 per cent. (Balevent and Onaran 2003, 441) They analyze difference between two age and compare outcomes according to the effect of economic crisis in 1994. They use the regression of female labor force participation (FLFP) on different groups unemployment rates and the other factors. They look at the variables such as education, number of children, and age of women to understand the relationship between these variables and dependent variable FLFP. The number of children has a significant prejudicious effect on the FLFP although it has no significant effect on male labor force participation. Only exception for the effect on MLFP is that if childrens ages are between 6 and 14, th en employment rate of husbands increased due to the expenses of school age children. If married women have fewer children, they have a aptness to participate in labor force. Their conclusion is derived from the fact that magical spell there is no significant correlation between 1988 data for added worker effect and discouraged worker affect, they find statistically significant result for added worker affect of the married women in currency crisis in 1994 which had negative correlation with discouraged worker effect. In other words, it can be concluded that the added worker effects dominates the discouraged worker effect by looking at 1994 crisis. Their expectation, not study in their research, is that added worker effect could be more dominant than discouraged worker effect for women due to the positive influence of female employment trends as well as getting more accustomed to working life.pek lkkaracan and Serkan Deirmenci look at the years between 2004 and 2010. They also incl ude single female into their analysis. They focus on the fact that added worker effect creates pressure on the labor market which has already contracted due to crisis. In addition to this, active labor market participants may give up looking and withdraw their labor force from labor market. They make emphasis on particular characteristics of the women such as their age, marital status, and education level. Household unemployment shock increases the participation of university graduates who are between 20 and 45 age group by up to 34 per cent while the percentage drops to 17% for high school graduates. (lkkaracan, and Deirmenci 2013,1) The effect of migration from rural to urban areas shifts the agricultural labor power of women from unpaid family workers to unpaid household workers while men shifts from agricultural worker to industrial or service workers in the urban areas. With the financial liberation, which started in 1980s, women have encountered with harsh working conditions, l ong working hours with low wages under poor labor market demand. Therefore, expected returns from female labor force participation are lower and structural bashfulness such as lack of child or elderly service weakens the added worker affects. (lkkaracan and Deirmenci 2013, 31) They make a conclusion that added worker effect in Turkey appears as a coping strategy to deal with economic downturns but it again refers to smaller effects like 8-10 percent of working age female become labor force participant with job loss of their husbands. If we look at 2008 crisis, Turkey faced with productivity loss as well as economic instability which pave the way to unemployment.According to the Institute of LaborLaw (2009), the Turkish unemployment rate in January 2009 was 15.1 percent, which roughly corresponded to 3,600,000 individuals being out of jobs. Based on the data of the Turkish Institute of Statistics (TURKSTAT) (2009), the labor unions declared that the highest rate of unemployment since the foundation of the Turkish Republic was during the period of the 20072008 economic crisis, when between 13.616.3 percent of all workers lost their jobs (Tes- 2009, 30). intimately nine million of these people now work without being covered by any social security insurance.page98- unregisterd worker.Policy OffersLack of child care service for the pre-school age and elderly care services, which constitutes structural constraints, leads women to stay at home in order to provide the needs of these family members. The majority of women do not take more than secondary education so that they are offered by these poor employment opportunities. Without any public service, they have to use their labor power for domestic workload and if they start to work, they will face with harsh conditions without satisfactory payments in the workplace. In addition to this, women who are employed in the informal sector suffer from the poor access of maternity leave which affects the labor supply of wom en.We estimate the marginal effect of the unemployment shock on labor market transition probability for the overall sample as well as for different groups of women, and hence demonstrate that the effect varies widely depending on the particular characteristics of the cleaning ladyfor example, her education level, age, urban/rural residence, and marital and parental status.Creating job opportunities for first time job seekers Affordable child careSustaining investments on educationIn 2012, a cash transfer program targeted to give social security coverage for the poor widowed women because these women without men are seen as impoverished and unprotected group to maintain living of their household by themselves. Distinction across welfare regimes is important to understand how social welfare is produced and allocated between state, market, and family. We should also take the criticism about welfare regime into account that this welfare regime approach is gender blind or in other words , there is gender bias toward women without men. (zar and Yakut-akar 2013, 25)Women are not capable of continuing their working lives because they have drop-outs with marriages or child born. Care services cannot be affordable for those women so that they turn their home again.Women without men ( a male breadwinner) can less likely to find job in the formal sector due to lack of experience and considerable break between working time and staying at home. They will not face with job opportunities in the formal sector so that they need to accept uninsured and low-waged works in informal sector. Characteristics of unregistered jobs create unstable and volatile situation for women due to its duration and wage level. To maintain their cursory livings, sometimes women take informal support from the relatives or neighborhoods but it turns out to be inadequate again.By providing support to only widowed women, that is,those women falling orthogonal family involuntarily upon the death of the spouse, the welfare regime in Turkey continues to assume women within the boundaries of family and punishesthose that fall outside these boundaries.32 spouse, the welfare regime in Turkey continues toassume women within the boundaries of family and punishesthose that fall outside these boundariesREFERENCESBalevent, L. and Onaran, O. 2003. The Rise And Decline In Teenage Suicides Psychology Essay
The Rise And Decline In Teenage Suicides Psychology EssayTeenage self-destructions are devastating, not only to the victim, but to families, friends and all who knew the victim. statistical info show the rise and decline in jejune felo-de-ses ages 15 to 24 as far back as 1952. The causes, symptoms, risk fixingss, are all factors. Studies indicate that young men commit suicide at a higher(prenominal) rate than young women. There are economical as advantageously as social surroundings that runaway a major role in placing puerilers at a higher risk of suicide. Researchers are finding that medical examination conditions undiagnosed or left untreated, is contributing to the rates of teenage suicides. Other researchers are finding that prototype signs are going unnoticed and with the helpance of schools workers, doctors, and peers and preceding(prenominal) all, parents, watching for such(prenominal) signs can make a dramatic change in the rates of teenage suicides. Appropriate funding for streak programs, family as well as school handlings can make a difference between life and demise in a teenager who whitethorn be considering suicide. The declare oneself of this paper is to explore the causes and prevention programs for teenager suicides between the ages of 15 and 24. The different ways gender, age, and society can influence a teenagers thoughts of suicide is also explored. I will show various warning signs and symptoms teenagers happen when contemplating suicide (Andrews, Tanya David, 2005). The overall purpose of my research is to examine the prevalence of teenage suicides between the ages of 15 and 24. diverse studies indicate that economical as well as social problems play a role in teenagers trying to commit suicide. It seems the lower the socioeconomic suppose, the higher the risk for teenage suicides (Brown, 2001). Other studies indicate that warning signs and symptoms are going unnoticed or untreated. Family histories, drugs, alcohol abu se, all play major roles and school workers, doctors, teachers, parents and so forth all need to be able to recognize and diagnosis such problems and try and reduce teenage suicide rates (Brown, et. al, 2007).Literature round offMany authors chord that social economic status affects the overall suicide rates among teenagers. They also agree that rural areas, sparsely populated areas in communities that vex experienced historical trauma and cultural leavinges (Brown, 2001 Brown, Wyman, Brinales, Gibbons, 2007 Miller Eckert, 2009).Brown (2001) states that upheavals in the economy, job losses and social as well as loss of traditions will only increase suicide rates in teenagers. This author does not mention in his article whether or not economical influences play a role in teenage suicides. Individuals orTHE revoke AND downslope IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 4teens living in the lowest socioeconomic areas are to a greater extent than five clock the risk of suicide compared to others (Br own, 2001).Many authors agree that school based curriculum programs, prevention programs, school personnel cookery involving teachers, concealment programs and community involvement are essential tools in preventing teenager suicides. They also agree on the percentage of teenage suicide rates and look at risk factors, warning signs and symptoms (Joe Bryant 2007 Kutcher, 2008 Miller, Eckert, 2009). Joe and Bryant (2007) and Kutcher (2008) also believe that screening of school-aged children can assist in identifying early risk factors and allow for intervention and prevention word.Brown 2001, Kutcher, 2008 and Wyman, Brinales and Gibbons (2007) agree that risk factors involving family histories of suicidal efforts, teenagers being exposed to drugs, alcohol, feelings of hopelessness, depression and mental disorders are risk factors that should be diagnosed and treated as a way in prevention methods. Miller and Eckert (2009) believe that factors leading to a decision to commit sui cide are triggers such as mental illness, turned on(p), family turmoil and so forth.Other authors took a look at antidepressants that physicians and prescribe to teenagers for depression and the side notions that could take place (Barlas, 2007 Brent, 2007, Dockasi, 2009 Wagner 2007). All three discuss the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA) and the black concussion warning labels that are now required to be placed on labels indicating the potential risk of suicide due to the side affects of antidepressants.Teenage suicides are a major public concern in nearly every country. Suicides account for nearly 3% of all deaths, and are the third leading cause of death in teenagers. High schoolTHE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 5students surveyed indicated that 9% deem considered suicide and 2.6% sire attempted suicide (Brown, et. al, 2007). railleryStatistics of SuicideAccording to the World health Organization, (WHO), teenage suicides have been on the rise from 1952 to 1992. Te enage suicides are the third leading cause of death in teenagers ages 15 to 24, and young men commit suicide successfully at a higher rate than women in over 30 countries. From the 1950s through and through 1998, youth suicide rates in the United States have nearly tripled (Brown, et al, 2007). Some reasons for such a trend are the loss of traditions, support, and teenagers can no longer rely on their parents as role models. This data indicates that mental illnesses are more prominent now in teenagers and is approaching 20% , compared to 10-12% in the 1960s (Brown, 2001).Suicide AttemptOne such case is when an 8th grader stood at the edge of a concrete bridge looking down to the fucking some fifty feet below. All he knew was that he wanted to die he extended his arms, took a deep breath and leaned forward. In an instance it could have been all over, expect for a stranger grabbing the young man around the stomach and pulling him to safety just seconds before he would have succeeded in committing suicide. Looking back, after receiving the necessary mental health diagnosis, he didnt regret what he act to do, but he came to understand that what made him do such a thing was what he now understood to be aTHE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 6mental illness. He knew he really didnt want to die, but something kept pushing him on, finally with help of a stranger and the right care, this young man can receive treatment for his illness and can live a long and productive life (Henick, 2010).Suicide Deaths Compared to Regular Medical ConditionsThe Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2004, reported a 300% increase in suicides rates. Rates for teenagers 15 to 19 year olds increased 11%. Teenagers ages 10 to 14 showed an increase in suicides rates of 100% (Andrew, Tanya, David, 2005). In 1996, some basic facts are that teenagers died from suicide more than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung dise ase combined. Nearly one in five high school students have seriously considered a suicide attempt during the preceding school year, and three students made genuine suicide attempts in spite of appearance the last year (Andrew, et al, 2005).There are many risk factors that can influence why a teenager may want to commit suicide and these include, age, gender, cultural and social influences, mental illness, recent losses, family histories of suicides, prior suicide attempts, peer pressure, family violence, sexual violence and so forth (Kutcher, 2008). One such risk factor is the access to the means. Teenagers in the United States succeeded in killing themselves at a rate of 2.5 % due to the easy access to guns at home or from their peers. Suicides by means of guns has increased at a more rapid pace than any other methods used, such as hangings, drugs, and so forth (Brown, 2001).THE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 7Effects of Social and Economic PressuresTeenagers are not immune to the economical state or their social surroundings and the effect it has on their way of thinking or looking at the future. Teenagers surveyed in one study showed results that indicated the lower the socioeconomic status, the higher the risk forteenagers and showed that they had more than a five time risk of committing suicide (Miller Eckert, 2009).Upheavals in the economy have caused undue stress in young people and are making them feel as though they are unable to cope (Brown, 2001). Studies have shown that have linked socioeconomic factors and suicide risks to sexual orientation, social disadvantages, sexual abuse, and so forth. everyplace 90% of victims found to have at least one mental health disorder (Kutcher, 2008).Teenagers being exposed to alcohol, drugs and other substance abuses are at a greater risk of committing suicide. Hopelessness and suffering, depression, and mental disorders aregoing undiagnosed or untreated. Separation or divorces of parents causes undue stre ss on teenagers (Miller Eckert, 2009). monition Signs and TreatmentsThe U.S. Food Drug Administration, (FDA). In 2003-2004, the FDA issued a public warning that antidepressants could trigger suicidal thoughts and behaviors in teenagers 20 and under after taking the drugs for a minimal of 2 months. The Journal of Medical Association, (JAMA), looked at 5,310 children and teenagers and found that children taking antidepressants added a risk about 2 in 100 of experiencing worsening suicidal feelings to a higher place what they had been feeling (Barlas, 2007). The FDA, ordered thatTHE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 8antidepressant drugs needed warning labels indicating young people are 4% more likely to exhibit suicidal intentions if taking these drugs. The black box warning labels should included in the medications bottle stated an increased risk of suicide may accompany the use of these antidepressants and the black box warnings were placed on the inserts of all antidepressan t medication and warned doctors to watch patients closely (Barlas, 2007 Brent, 2007 Dockasi, 2009 and Wagner, 2007).There are many warning signs that family members, friends, and school officials can be made aware and to look for in a teenager contemplating suicide. A very significant sign is the teenager tried to commit suicide previously mood changes giving away personal belongings depression great sadness feeling of isolation withdrawing from family, friends, peers eating habits good turn to drugs and alcohol, and harming themselves to list a few.Common circumstances are linked to reasons why teenagers are committing suicide. The feelings of being rejected by family, friends, peers, failure and disappointment inoneself, emotional and family turmoil can lead a teenager to look for a permanent solution, such as suicide, since they cannot remedy the problems themselves. Many teenagers do not whop they are suffering from a mental illness which could be causing their thoughts and fe elings and by diagnosing and treating teenagers with mental illness. There can be a reduction in the deaths of teenagers and continue the downturn in statistics (Shaffer Cowdry, 1999).Studies have shown that have linked socioeconomic factors and suicide risks to sexual orientation, social disadvantages, sexual abuse, and so forth. Over 90% of victims found tohave at least one mental health disorder (Kutcher, 2008).THE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 9Family histories of suicide attempts and teenagers who have attempted suicide before are at a greater risk for a second suicide attempt (Kutcher, 2008). Risk factors, such as whichpopulations are at an elevated risk and which risk and positive factors could be targeted for preventing suicide (Brown, et al, 2007). There are various causes that could be contributing to teenagers committing suicide.Preventions of Suicide programme school based prevention programs involving support of staff, screening of students and training teacher s of what to look for in a troubled teenager. Involving peers and the community are areas that can also bring in awareness to teenagers in need (Andrew, et al, 2005). Prevention programs involving specific information need to be provided directly to students that focus on warning signs and teaching peers how to talk with some other teenager contemplating suicide. Knowledge is power and the more knowledge teenagers are about suicide, the better the results will be (Miller Eckert, 2009).Physicians or primary care doctors are account individuals in being able to diagnosis a trouble teenager. They are the first choice of contact that many teenagers want to contact in times of distress. Physicians treating teenagers need to be well educated and know the warning signs and give proper treatment (Kutcher, 2008). One such study analyzed prescription data for antidepressant medications used by teenagers and found that Lithium actually reduced the rate of both completed suicides and suicid e attempts in teenagers diagnosed with bipolar disorder (Steele Doey, 2007).THE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 10Many schools are now using screenings for school-age children in an effort to identify teenagers at risk and can assist in identifying early risk factors and allow for intervention and prevention treatment (Joe Bryant 2007 Kutcher, 2008 Miller Eckert, 2009). School psychologists have an ethical and legal responsibility to prevent teenage suicides whenever possible. These psychologists play a vital role in school-based suicide prevention (Miller Eckert, 2009).There are many ways that state governments, public involvement and schools, colleges, healthcare providers and officials can make a difference in the overall teenage suicide rates. The National Governors Association, (NGA), produced a list of recommendations to assist in reducing teenage suicides. They suggest increasing public awareness, creating state prevention plans, establishing school-based preventio n programs (Henick, 2010).The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008, surveyed students in grades 9-12, and found that 14.5% of teenagers in the U.S. have seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months 18.7% of teenagers were females 10.3% of those teenagers were males 11.3% of teenagers made a plan about how to commit suicide. Another result was that 6.9% of teenagers made at least one attempt that resulted in injury and required medical treatment (Miller Eckert, 2009).THE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 11The Presidents New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (2003) and the Childrens Mental Health Screening and Prevention Act of (2003), target teenagers who are at risk for suicide. Research has shown that when asked, a teenager will commonly state whether or not he or she is contemplating suicide. Many states now require that schools provide suicide prevention and management. There are three categories of the programs are, curriculum programs, in-service traini ng for teachers and staff, and school-wide suicide screenings of school aged children (Joe Bryant, 2007).In 2003, President Bush authorized 82 million dollars over a three year period by passing a new law aimed at preventing suicides among teenagers and young people. The new law provided states, colleges, universities and other agencies with grant money to start suicide prevention and intervention programs. The Presidents New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, (2003), established screening of children, looking for mental illness, establishing community-based treatment and training for child care professionals in an attempt to stop suicides in teenagers (Joe Bryant, 2007).Laws EnactedThe U.S. Congress and Surgeon General passed prevention acts with a main priority for 2010, aiming at addressing and trying to change statistical teenage suicide attempts currently at 2.6% down to 1%. Addressing antidepressants medications and psychosocial programs involving intervention will be done through research to determine hat strategy would be almost effective (Brown et. al, 2007).THE RISE AND DECLINE IN TEENAGE SUICIDES 12ConclusionOur children are our future. Studies that have shown suicide rates among our teenagers over the years have been at epidemic levels. There is a great need for federal, state, and local government involvement. Schools, universities, parents, communities and so forth, need to become aware of the causes, symptoms and address the teenagers needs accordingly. Reducing teenage suicide rates will be challenging, but by identifying risk factors, intervention and preventive treatment programs, funding and practices will definitely make a difference. Ending teenage suicides should be an attainable goal.
